The Story of Chester Nez

He was just a normal Navajo Native American in high school. But in one day that all changed. Chester Nez is the last living code talker. He is 93 years old and he is from New Mexico. There was at first 29, but now he is the only one left. Those first initial 29, had the enormous task of creating a code no one could ever solve. It involved their native language, Navajo. When Chester was a kid, he would get beat for speaking Navajo, but now he is being asked to speak it and teach it to help stop the Japanese. The Japanese had cracked every code America had, so they needed Chester and other Navajos like him to help. It took the 29 young men 13 weeks to create a code! What they came up with was for the letter "a" they used ant but spoken in Navajo. Which is Wol-la-chee. So the letter "a" in code was Wol-la-chee. But of course to spell something out in the Navajo code would take forever. So Chester's group had other words to translate important military terms. Chester served in five battles during World War II. Chester wasn't able to tell anyone about the code. The marines and the army didn't want anyone to know and have it leak out. Just imagine, you came up with an amazing code that no one could break, but you can't tell anyone. Not even your own parents. He wanted to tell his parents so bad. But he didn't tell, he kept his promise. In comparison to Louie form Unbroken, they both served their country, but in very different ways. They both had hardships throughout their life as well. Chester said, "I am very proud and very happy for what I did." He should be!
